ok, so i will have to agree with sarah on the bleu d'auvergne. i am a big fan of using it in recipes. it is definitely not the best blue cheese i have ever tasted, but definitely the best value and very versatile. i like to make steak with a shallot-strawberry-red wine reduction and add the bleu d'auvergne at the last second so it gets nice and warm and creamy. it is the perfect cheese for it! on another note, for those of you in the states who can't find bleu d'auvergne, one of my favorite american blue cheese is maytag blue. it is made by - you guessed it - the washing machine people (i think they have separate factories, though. and the repairman doesn't wait around for you to call if the cheese has gone bad). a great cheese considering the maytag empire is definitely not known for gourmet cheese (until now).

as for the euro moine, i did not even taste it. the monk caricature on the front of the package was enough to deter me.

mont d'or - sarah bought this one, so i'm not sure if it was cut off of my beloved vacherin mont d'or. i don't think so as it was indeed very smooth and buttery and not at all pungent as is the vacherin. a cheese that i enjoyed eating more once i had finished it than while i was actually eating it. not sure if i would buy it again for a long time though, it didn't really do much for me.

the st. marcellin was a real cutie. firm yet smooth with just enough tang to make you want to come back for more. i would definitely purchase this cheese again as it was
a)cheap, and i'm on a budget, and b)very tasty.

i'm going to buy more cheese tomorrow!

This cheese sucks. Don't buy it. I bought it because its the cheapest cheese that the store across the street sells. It's a brie knockoff, and its virtually flavorless and very rubbery in texture. Spend the extra 50centimes for the real thing!

Bleu d'Auvergne cheese review:

A perfectly cheap substitute for Roquefort! I bought this cheese originally because it was a € less than its counterpart, Roquefort. This is my favorite bleu cheese to crumble and put in my caesar salads! Its also very tasty by itself on bread or crackers. Its a very very moldy pungent cheese though, so those who aren't adventurous or know they don't like bleu cheese, beware!
This cheese is very good, but a bit saltier than other bleu cheeses, so make sure you have a beverage of choice nearby when consuming!

I found this cheese to be very bland at first. I was dissappointed with my first few bites. I expected something a bit more "in your face". After the first couple bites though, I came to appreciate this cheese. Its subtle, it sneaks up on you. Its very very oaky, and woodsy smelling. Its consistency is that of brie or camembert, as is its tasteless rind. This buttery, woodsy, cheese is a perfect starter cheese for those not wishing to try the more advanced "cowshit smelling" cheeses.

I loved this cheese. It was very inexpensive, around 1€ for the small disk, and very tangy! Not too smelly, not too creamy, a nice soft cheese with a bit of a bite to it! The rind is edible and doesn't taste like anything really. This cheese is probably very versatile, however I chose to eat it on Ritz crackers

hi, tracy here...thought i would introduce myself.

my favorite cheese of all time is called vacherin mont d'or. it is a raw cow's milk cheese that comes in a round wooden box. you let it come to room temperature, then eat it with a spoon. it tastes like heaven on earth. and, of course, it smells really bad too. but in a good way.

i believe this cheese is a winter cheese so i'm definitely going to get me some soon. be on the lookout.

i also very much enjoy epoisses de bourgogne, fresh goat cheese, and really good parmesan.

raclette is one of my favorite meals of all time. this is where they give you a half-wheel of reblochon cheese (from the savoie region in france)and attach it to what looks like a medieval torture device (it's really just something for the cheese to lean on while a heat lamp melts the top layer). as the cheese melts, you scrape it onto your plate with a wooden spatula and eat it with cured meat, cornichons, and boiled potatoes. fantastic!

as you can tell i am something of a cheese nut.

more later, i bought a st. marcellin that sarah and i will taste very soon!

This is a new blog that Tracy and I thought up to talk about and obsess over the new french cheeses that we're trying. Anyone who knows me knows that I'm totally obsessed with cheese. So at first I was like, hmm, I should start a cheese diary, just to keep track of the ones that I like, and the ones that smell like cow shit.

So, soon, we will both start posting pics of the cheeses and our commentaries on the French cheeses we're trying!
